Iran warns US and Israel of consequences for ceasefire breach
Iran stated on Monday that the ceasefire with the US encompasses “all fronts, including Lebanon,” and called on the US and Israel to bear responsibility for “the consequences of any breach.”
“For immediate attention: The ceasefire between Iran and the US explicitly covers all fronts, including Lebanon. A breach on one front constitutes a breach of the ceasefire across all fronts,” wrote Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on X.
“The US and Israel are responsible for the consequences of any violation,” he warned.
The statement follows Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei warning on Monday morning that Tehran would not hesitate to assist Lebanon against Israel’s “illegal aggression” towards the country.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered military strikes on Beirut on Monday in a new escalation despite a US-mediated ceasefire that took effect on 17 April.
Tensions in the Middle East have escalated since the US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in February.
Tehran retaliated with strikes targeting Israel and US allies in the Gulf, alongside the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The ceasefire came into effect on 8 April through Pakistan-mediated talks, but subsequent negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.
