Iran has warned the United States (US) not to renege on a recently signed peace agreement, asserting it will not hesitate to retaliate if Washington fails to meet its commitments under the deal.

The warning came after Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian welcomed the agreement with the US, calling it a ‘historic’ document.

‘This is a historic document and a message from a strong Iran: peace will be achieved under the umbrella of mutual respect,’ Pezeshkian said in a social media post featuring an image of the agreement, as reported by detikNews on Thursday (18/6/2026).

The document bears the signatures of Pezeshkian, US President Donald Trump, and their mediator, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

Trump reportedly signed the Iran-US Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during a dinner with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Palace of Versailles following the G7 summit on Wednesday (17/6) evening local time. ‘Just signed it,’ Trump said as he left the palace.

The Iranian government separately confirmed it had signed the agreement to end the war with the US.

‘The text of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding has been finalised with the signatures of the presidents – now it is time to test the implementation of the agreement,’ said Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei, as quoted by Iran’s official IRNA news agency.

Baqaei stated that the real challenge begins now that the document has been signed. He noted that implementing international agreements is always far more difficult than drafting them.

‘The fact that we have signed an agreement to end the war at this stage does not mean we have forgotten the past or abandoned the valuable lessons we have learned,’ Baqaei said.

‘Our work now is more difficult than before, because implementing international agreements is always far harder than drafting them, especially with parties that do not commit to their obligations,’ he added, as reported by Iran’s Press TV on Thursday (18/6/2026).

He stressed that Iran will closely monitor the implementation of the agreement and ensure the other party fulfils all its commitments.

Baqaei also made it clear that Iran will not remain silent if Washington neglects its duties. ‘If the United States fails to implement its commitments, we too will fail. It does not mean we will fulfil our commitments while the other side avoids its obligations,’ he asserted.
