REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK – Iran’s permanent mission to the UN blamed the United States on Friday (15/5/2026) for attempting to rally international support for its actions against Iran through a draft UN Security Council resolution on the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on its X social media account, the mission stated that the US is using the support of several countries for the unilateral, politically motivated draft resolution to create the impression of broad international support for what it considers the US’s illegal actions.

“It is now clear that the US is trying to exploit the number of supporters – referred to as supporters of the politically and unilaterally motivated draft resolution – to create a false image of broad international support for the ongoing illegal actions,” wrote Iran’s permanent mission to the UN.

Furthermore, the US’s efforts are aimed at opening up opportunities for further military action in the region. This comes after the US, along with Bahrain and other Gulf states, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, and Qatar, announced a draft resolution allegedly to defend freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also warned the countries supporting the US-led initiative that they would be held accountable if tensions escalate.

“If the US provokes a new escalation, then all supporting countries will share international responsibility with Washington for the consequences. There is no political or diplomatic protection that can absolve them of responsibility for facilitating, enabling, and legitimizing US aggression,” the statement said.

Regional tensions remain high since the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Iran against Israel and US allies in Gulf countries, as well as the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire took effect on April 8 with mediation by Pakistan. However, negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement.

Trump then extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining a blockade against ships sailing to or from Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz.
