Iran War Claims New Victim: Indian Condom Stocks Scarce

The condom industry in India is beginning to suffer serious repercussions from the war in the Middle East, which has triggered disruptions in the global supply chain. Shortages of primary raw materials are stalling production, raising concerns about the availability of stocks in the market.

Manufacturers report a “major shortage” in the supply of silicone oil, a crucial component in condom production. Additionally, the price of ammonia, used to stabilise raw latex, is projected to surge by 40-50%.

India itself produces more than 6 billion condoms per year, making it one of the world’s major players. In 2024, production reached 6.4 billion units, accounting for about 17% of global output. The industry is valued at around US$860 million, equivalent to Rp13.3 trillion, but operates on thin margins, rendering it highly vulnerable to rises in raw material costs.

The impact of the crisis is already being felt on the ground. Several pharmacies in major cities such as Mumbai and New Delhi are reported to be experiencing condom stock shortages.

The domino effect of the conflict is also spilling over into the energy sector. Disruptions in distribution through the Strait of Hormuz are driving up oil prices and global logistics costs, ultimately increasing production expenses across various industries.

With high dependence on imported raw materials, India’s condom industry is expected to remain under pressure until the Middle East conflict subsides. This situation is simultaneously heightening the risk of product shortages in the domestic market.

For context, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the conflict with the United States and Israel, and this decision has become the primary trigger for disruptions in petrochemical distribution. This route is one of the world’s vital energy trade pathways, so disturbances in the region have widespread impacts on various industrial sectors.
