The Iranian government in Tehran has affirmed that it will use every means to resist economic pressure from the US government, according to Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Monday (24/8).

US President Donald Trump announced on 20 August the launch of an economic operation against Iran, which he described as isolation on an unprecedented scale. Trump also called on his allies to support Washington’s plan. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to detail the economic measures at a press conference on Monday (24/8).

“Iran will certainly use all its multilateral options to counter these economic sanctions,” Baghaei said during the press conference. He added that Tehran had previously planned measures to deal with such a scenario, and stated that Iran has warned many countries that involvement in US actions, including naval blockades, would carry consequences.

On 28 February, the US and Israel began striking a number of targets in Iran, which Iran subsequently retaliated against with similar attacks. In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending hostilities, but shortly afterwards the two sides clashed again, launching mutual attacks.

The Iran-US conflict remains unresolved to this day, though the two parties are not engaged in direct combat, with the US relying on economic pressure against Iran.
