Iran-US Negotiations in Doha Conclude with 'Positive Progress'

Negotiators from the United States and Iran have achieved ‘positive progress’ during indirect talks in Doha, Qatar, with the next round expected to take place after the funeral of Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson said.

Majed Al Ansari, the spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, attributed the progress to the results of talks held last month in Switzerland regarding the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

‘Qatari and Pakistani mediators concluded separate meetings with US and Iranian negotiators in Doha today, with positive progress achieved on issues related to the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, based on the outcomes of the Lake Lucerne Summit,’ Ansari said, as reported by AFP on Thursday (2/7/2026).

‘The parties agreed to continue the talks in the coming period, with the next meeting scheduled as soon as possible after the funeral procession of the former Supreme Leader of Iran,’ he added.

Earlier, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, Kazem Gharibabadi, stated that the Doha meeting focused on the implementation of the memorandum, including US violations of the understanding.

He cited these violations as breaches of commitments under Clause 1 of the memorandum concerning the cessation of the war in Lebanon, reports of US efforts to reinforce equipment and troops in the region, and several threatening and interventionist statements by American officials.

The Iran-US Memorandum of Understanding was signed electronically on 18 June by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump, with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acting as mediator.
