Iran urges UN to prevent Gulf states from aiding US attacks
Moscow (ANTARA) - Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei has demanded that the United Nations call on Gulf states to stop permitting the United States to launch attacks on Iranian territory.
“You [the UN] must urge the countries concerned to immediately stop allowing the United States to use their territories as a launching pad for aggression against Iran,” the spokesman said.
Earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned of disastrous consequences should hostilities between the US and Iran resume, according to his spokesman, Stephane Dujarric.
In a post on X, Baghaei responded to Dujarric, commenting on the UN statement regarding the resumption of hostilities between Washington and Tehran, as well as attacks on other countries in the Middle East.
According to Baghaei, Iran’s attacks on US bases and military facilities in the southern Persian Gulf constitute a legitimate exercise of the “right to self-defence”.
Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum on 18 June governing the end of the conflict that began on 28 February. However, on the night of 8 July, the United States launched attacks once again.
According to US President Donald Trump, this was a reaction to Iran’s actions against merchant vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. He threatened to intensify the attacks should the situation recur.
In response, Iran launched attacks on US military infrastructure in the Middle East, particularly in Kuwait. The country’s Foreign Ministry described Washington’s aggression as a serious violation of the agreements already reached.
