Iran Urges UN to Play Active Role in Post-War Reconstruction

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi has urged the United Nations to play an active role in the reconstruction and damage assessment of Iran following wars with the United States and Israel. The call was made during a meeting with the UN Resident Coordinator in Iran, Christine Weigand, on Tuesday. During the meeting, the deputy foreign minister stressed the importance of cooperation between Iran and the UN. He encouraged UN offices in Iran to make more optimal use of the country’s valuable human resource skills. He then outlined the impacts and consequences of the two recent wars faced by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Gharibabadi urged UN agencies and offices to be more active in supporting the reconstruction process and reviewing the violence and damage that occurred. UN bodies were also encouraged to present a realistic picture of the humanitarian and economic impact of the wars and to mobilise international resources and aid to facilitate reconstruction and development projects. Meanwhile, Christine Weigand expressed appreciation for Iran’s perspective and cooperation, concurring on the need to optimise highly skilled Iranian personnel within UN offices. Weigand expressed the readiness of the UN Representative Office in Iran to submit damage information to specialised agencies and to support the adjustment of cooperation programmes according to the current situation in Iran. She also affirmed her commitment to mobilising financial resources and garnering support from development partners for Iran.
