Iran Unwilling to Be Bound by US Rules
The Iranian government has stated that a final decision regarding a potential memorandum of agreement with the United States is still under discussion, according to a source familiar with the developments on Sunday (14/6). “Iran has not announced a final decision on the proposed memorandum of agreement,” the source told the Fars news agency. The source added that a review of the political, legal, and technical aspects of the proposal is ongoing. According to Fars, various aspects of the draft agreement are currently being discussed at both expert and decision-making levels. Earlier, US President Donald Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Saturday (13/6) that a deal with Iran was scheduled to be signed. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, whose country is acting as a mediator between the United States and Iran, also stated that the agreement could potentially be finalised within the next 24 hours. However, Iran has stressed that the agreement will not be signed on Sunday, although it could be inked in the coming days. The diplomatic process mediated by Pakistan focuses on efforts to end hostilities between Tehran and Washington, reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, and reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme. Iranian officials have repeatedly stated that most of the draft agreement’s contents have been approved by both sides. However, they also accuse the United States of slowing progress in the negotiations through changes in stance and statements deemed contradictory.
