Iran to use all means to counter US economic pressure

The Iranian government in Tehran has affirmed that it will use all means to counter economic pressure from the US government, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said on Monday.

US President Donald Trump announced on 20 August the launch of an economic operation against Iran, which he described as isolation on an unprecedented scale. Trump also called on his allies to support Washington’s plan.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is set to detail a number of these economic measures at a press conference on Monday.

“Iran will certainly use all its multilateral options to counter these economic sanctions,” Baghaei said during the press conference.

He added that Tehran had previously planned measures to deal with such a scenario, and stated that Iran had warned many countries that involvement in US actions, including a naval blockade, would carry consequences.

On 28 February, the US and Israel began striking a number of targets in Iran, which Iran subsequently answered with similar attacks.

In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending hostilities, but shortly afterwards the two sides clashed again, launching attacks on each other.

The Iran-US conflict remains unresolved to this day, but the two sides are not engaged in direct combat, and the US is relying on economic pressure against Iran.
