Iran Threatens 'Unforeseen Consequences' After Ukraine Attacks Its Ship
Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has threatened ‘unforeseen consequences’ following a Ukrainian military attack on a commercial vessel from Tehran in the Caspian Sea over the weekend. In a statement on Monday (27/7/2026), Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned Kyiv’s attack as ‘unjustifiable’. ‘This Ukrainian action is a completely illegal and unjustifiable act, contrary to the United Nations Charter, and is also a dangerous act of adventurism, which we will certainly not leave unanswered,’ Baghaei asserted during a press conference. He stressed that the consequences of Ukraine’s actions ‘will certainly be unforeseen’. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, recently focused on the struggle for control over the Strait of Hormuz, has now extended to the Caspian Sea. Iranian authorities previously reported that Ukraine launched a military strike against one of its commercial ships, causing the vessel to ‘explode, killing one sailor and injuring another’. On Saturday (25/7), Iran summoned the Ukrainian charge d’affaires in Tehran to protest the attack. On the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated via social media platform X that Ukraine had achieved ‘very strong results’ through long-range strikes in the Caspian Sea, including against ‘vessels used for military cargo shipments involving Iran, as well as a warship’. Tehran reacted strongly, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisting the Ukrainian attack ‘cannot be left unanswered’. Araghchi also accused Kyiv of launching the strike ‘on the orders of Israel’. ‘This is a blatant violation of the UN Charter, carried out on the orders of Israel to drag Europe into its war,’ the Iranian foreign minister charged. Araghchi said he had conveyed Iran’s position in phone calls with EU Foreign Policy Chief Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. ‘In talks with EU High Representative Kallas and Foreign Minister Lavrov, it was stressed that the actions of ’the parasite’ in Kyiv CANNOT BE LEFT UNANSWERED,’ Araghchi asserted. Senior Iranian MP Ebrahim Azizi also issued a stern reaction, warning Ukraine that any attack on Iran would have consequences. ‘Every attack on Iran has always had a price, and that still holds true today,’ Azizi stated via social media platform X on Sunday (26/7).
