Iran Threatens UK Over US Military Support
IRAN has issued a stern warning to Britain over the consequences of allowing the United States (US) to use British air bases to launch attacks on Iranian territory.
The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stressed that any country that facilitates or becomes involved in military aggression against Tehran’s sovereignty must be prepared to bear the legal and security consequences.
“Iran is fully committed to defending its sovereignty, territorial integrity, national interests and security from any form of aggression. Every country that becomes a party to military aggression against Iran will be held responsible for its consequences,” read an official statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Thursday (23 July).
Tehran strongly condemned London’s stance, judging that the policy giving the green light to US fighter jet operations at British bases violated the United Nations Charter.
Earlier, a Bloomberg report revealed that the British Prime Minister had allowed the US military to make use of British air bases to support what Washington described as a “defensive strike” against Iran.
The situation in the Middle East region has heated up once again after a ceasefire agreed on 18 June collapsed. US forces under the Central Command (CENTCOM) resumed bombardment of several areas in Iran. CENTCOM claimed the military operations were retaliation for Iran’s actions targeting commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
In response, Iran launched counter-attacks on various US military bases in the Middle East. The escalation prompted US authorities to declare that the agreement to halt hostilities between the two countries had officially ended.
Tensions between the United States and Iran rose further after President Donald Trump announced subsequent military operations. Riza Annisa Pujarama, a researcher at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance (Indef), assessed that global oil prices were continuing to rise amid the escalating conflict. Trump also formally notified Congress that Washington was resuming military operations against Iran.
Meanwhile, the US House of Representatives approved a defence budget of US$1.15 trillion for 2027, covering troop pay rises and Trump’s ‘Golden Dome’ project. The remains of four US soldiers killed in the Iran war were returned to Delaware, with President Trump describing the moment as his hardest duty.
