Iran threatens to close Strait of Hormuz until US fulfils commitments

Istanbul (ANTARA) - The Speaker of the Iranian Parliament stated on Sunday that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until the United States fulfils the commitments made under the June 2026 agreement and meets the requirements set by Tehran.

Speaking before parliament, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf, stated that Iran has firmly communicated its requirements to its opponents through intermediaries, according to reports from the state broadcaster IRIB.

“The opposing side is well aware that attempts at deception and unilateral coercion have failed. Until these requirements are met, the legitimate rights of the Iranian people are recognised, and American commitments are fulfilled, there will be no opportunity to return to previous negotiating conditions or to reopen the Strait of Homuz,” he said.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated after the US and Israel launched attacks against Iran on 28 February, triggering retaliatory strikes from Iran against countries in the region that host US military assets.

Iran has also closed the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most vital waterways for the shipment of oil and gas.

Washington and Tehran reached an agreement in June which included a cessation of military operations, as well as arrangements to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic.

However, the agreement subsequently failed due to disputes between the two parties regarding navigation and security arrangements in the strategic waterway.
