Tensions in the Gulf region have intensified after Iran’s military issued a strong warning to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding potential attacks from its territory.

In its official statement, Iran’s military command affirmed that it would launch a heavy assault if any aggression originates from UAE territory against the disputed islands of Abu Musa and Greater Tunb.

“If there is further aggression from UAE territory against Iran’s islands, our armed forces will respond with a major attack,” stated Iran’s military.

The islands of Abu Musa and Greater Tunb have long been a source of dispute between the two countries. Iran controls the areas, but the UAE also claims sovereignty over them. Their location near the Strait of Hormuz makes the region highly strategic geopolitically.

The Strait of Hormuz itself is a vital route for global energy trade, with around one-fifth of the world’s oil supply typically passing through the area. However, maritime traffic is now disrupted due to the expanding regional conflict.

Tensions have risen since the US and Israeli military strikes against Iran on 28 February, which subsequently triggered retaliatory actions from Tehran at various points in the Middle East.

Iran accuses Gulf states of providing access to US forces to launch attacks from their territories. These accusations are accompanied by missile and drone strikes claimed to target American interests in the region.

However, Gulf states have repeatedly denied these allegations. They have affirmed that they will not allow their territory or airspace to be used to attack Iran. (AFP/I-1)
