Iran: Success of negotiations with US depends on fulfilling obligations

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that the success of ongoing negotiations with the United States depends on fulfilling the various commitments agreed upon by both parties. “The effectiveness of the talks (with the US) depends on full commitment to the agreed obligations and their proper implementation,” Pezeshkian wrote on social media platform X on Tuesday. He emphasised that statements made outside the agreed framework of cooperation would not help advance the negotiations. “Progress in this step will be measured by adherence to the agreed responsibilities,” he said. The comments follow talks between the US and Iran in Burgenstock, Switzerland, on Sunday, in an effort to achieve the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. Iran and the US announced on 14 June that they had reached a 14-point understanding, mediated by Pakistan, to end the war and resolve outstanding disputes through dialogue and negotiation. The memorandum, known as the Islamabad Understanding, came into effect on 18 June after being digitally signed by Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump. The agreement includes provisions related to ending the war, including in Lebanon, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of the US naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports.
