Iran Submits Conditions for Ceasefire: Demands Compensation and Jurisdiction over the Strait of Hormuz
Iran’s Ambassador to Russia, Kazem Jalali, has outlined several crucial demands to end the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. This comes after reports that Tehran has sent an official response to the US-proposed peace plan. Citing the Tasnim news agency, Iran is currently awaiting a counter-response from Washington. Through the social media platform X, Ambassador Jalali explained that permanent peace can only be achieved if legal and political conditions are met. “A lasting ceasefire requires the fulfilment of the following political and legal demands: the end of aggression and terror, followed by objective guarantees that war will not recur,” Jalali wrote. In addition to halting aggression, Iran demands full compensation for all infrastructure damage and losses arising from the conflict. Tehran also asserts its strategic position in international maritime security as a key condition for peace. Iran specifically demands “respect for Iran’s legal jurisdiction in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure international maritime security.” Jalali emphasised that without meeting these conditions, stable peace is impossible. Furthermore, Jalali stressed that Tehran will continue to exercise its legitimate right to self-defence until all sources of threats to its sovereignty are completely eradicated. Media reports also mention that Tehran’s demands include halting all forms of hostility towards Iran’s regional allies in the Middle East. This open conflict peaked after the United States and Israel launched joint airstrikes on Iranian territory, including Tehran, on 28 February. Those strikes caused significant infrastructure damage and resulted in casualties. In response, Iran launched counter-attacks on Israeli territory and US military bases in the region as a form of self-defence.
