Iran strikes US base in Kuwait amid escalating Strait of Hormuz tensions
Tehran — The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed retaliatory strikes early Thursday (28 May 2026) against a US military airbase. The strikes targeted the location from which US airstrikes had been launched against Iranian military sites in the port city of Bandar Abbas.
The IRGC stated that the retaliatory strikes occurred shortly after US fighter jets attacked a site near Bandar Abbas Airport using air-launched missiles. ‘This retaliation is a serious warning to our adversaries. They must know that any aggressive action will never go unanswered,’ the IRGC said in a statement.
The IRGC also warnings of ‘far more decisive’ response if the enemy dares to repeat such actions. The IRGC added that all consequences of the tension rest solely with the aggressor, according to Mehr News.
Recent incidents in the Strait of Hormuz have been triggered by navigational violations, according to semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim. Four vessels, including a US-owned oil tanker, were detected turning off their radar and tracking systems. The vessels allegedly attempted to illegally transit the Strait amid Iran’s strict restrictions.
Iranian Navy forces had demanded identification from the vessels. Upon receiving no response or cooperation, the IRGC fired warning shots, forcing the US oil tanker to halt and turn back.
In response, the US military launched airstrikes targeting three locations near Bandar Abbas Airport. Iranian authorities reported no casualties or material damage from the US strikes.
The IRGC immediately retaliated by striking a US military base in the Gulf region. Although the specific base was not disclosed, heightened air defence activity in Kuwait suggests the Iranian attack targeted the US base there.
