WASHINGTON — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has targeted a US air base in Kuwait in retaliation for US air strikes near Bandar Abbas airport in southern Iran.

According to semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim, the IRGC stated the retaliatory strike occurred at 04:50 local time (08:20 WIB), several hours after what they described as US attacks near the port city’s airport using air-launched projectiles.

‘This is a serious warning to ensure the enemy knows aggression will not go unanswered, and if repeated, our response will be firmer,’ the IRGC said on Thursday (27 May).

There has been no immediate comment from the US military so far.

Previously, a US official told Anadolu that American forces shot down four Iranian drones posing a threat near the Strait of Hormuz and attacked an Iranian land-based control station in Bandar Abbas that was preparing to launch a fifth drone.

‘These actions are measured, purely defensive, and intended to uphold the ceasefire,’ said the official, who requested anonymity.

The latest attacks followed US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirming earlier strikes in southern Iran targeting missile launch sites and Iranian vessels suspected of attempting to lay mines.

Iran condemned the strikes as a ‘serious breach of the ceasefire’.

US President Donald Trump previously stated he was ‘dissatisfied’ with the progress of negotiations to end the conflict between Washington and Tehran.

Tensions in the Middle East escalated on 28 February when the US and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate with a barrage of drones and missiles striking targets across the region and closing the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire came into effect on 8 April through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a more permanent agreement.

Trump then extended the ceasefire indefinitely while maintaining a blockade on ships travelling to or from Iranian ports via the Strait of Hormuz.
