Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had bombed dozens of American military bases in the Middle East. The attack came in retaliation following alleged US and Israeli air strikes that resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to reports on Sunday, 1 March 2026, explosions were heard in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, and Doha, Qatar.

As reported by Al Jazeera and AFP, Iran announced that it had launched a massive missile and drone assault against Israeli and US military bases across the Arab region. The IRGC claimed to have struck 27 US bases, as well as Israel’s Tel Nof air base, the Israeli Army’s command headquarters at HaKirya in Tel Aviv, and a major defence industry complex in the same city.

Iran’s military emphasised that it would implement different and harsh retaliatory measures, with successive blows that were regretted. Explosions were heard in several locations following Tehran’s announcement.

AFP reported that loud explosions were heard on Sunday morning local time at Erbil Airport, which serves as the headquarters of the US-led coalition forces in Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region. Black smoke billowed from the airport area.

Earlier on Saturday, 28 February, the US-led coalition forces also shot down several missiles and explosive-laden drones over Erbil.

Israeli military stated that it was responding to Iran’s missile attack. Israel activated air raid sirens across central Israel and parts of the occupied West Bank.

“Sirens have been activated in several areas across the country, following the identification of missiles launched from Iran towards the State of Israel,” the military said, adding that the air force “is operating to intercept and strike threats if necessary”.

Additionally, several explosions were also heard in Qatar’s capital, Doha, and Bahrain’s capital, Manama. Air raid sirens also sounded in Kuwait. Countries near Iran have been hosting US military personnel and combat equipment.
