Iran: Strait of Hormuz now fully open for merchant vessels

Geneva (ANTARA) - Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the UN in Geneva, Ali Bahreini, said on Tuesday (23/6) that the Strait of Hormuz is now fully open for merchant vessels. Bahreini stated that in recent days a large quantity of oil has been shipped through the Strait of Hormuz and the strategic waterway is operating normally. “The strait is fully open for vessels, including merchant ships,” he told reporters in Geneva. The statement was made by Bahreini after Iran and the United States reached an agreement that includes the restoration of shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Last week, Iran and the United States electronically signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to end the military conflict that began on 28 February. Previously, an Anadolu report noted that commercial vessel traffic in the strait rose to its highest level since early June after the agreement came into effect. Technical negotiations between Iran and the US, mediated by Pakistan and Qatar, were held in Switzerland on 21 June to discuss the implementation of the Islamabad MoU.
