Iran states readiness to end Middle East tensions, urges US to demonstrate seriousness
President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, has officially stated his country’s readiness to end conflicts and tensions in the Middle East. The statement was made during talks with Qatar’s Emir, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The Iranian government affirmed its commitment to seeking diplomatic solutions to de-escalate regional conflicts.
In an official statement released by the Iranian Presidency on Tuesday (26 May), President Pezeshkian expressed gratitude for Qatar’s active role in facilitating peace talks. ‘The Iranian President thanked the Qatari government for its continued support and constructive efforts in peace initiatives, stating Iran’s readiness to move towards a dignified framework to end current regional conflicts and tensions,’ the statement read.
Pezeshkian also highlighted the role of the United States in the conflict, stating that stability cannot be achieved unilaterally and requires genuine commitment from Washington. ‘Amid ongoing tensions with the US, Pezeshkian said it is time for Washington to demonstrate seriousness towards peace,’ the statement added.
Additionally, Pezeshkian revealed that technical teams are currently finalising a draft agreement to create a more solid peace roadmap. ‘Serious efforts are underway, including at expert level, to finalise documents and texts to prepare a clear path to stability,’ he said.
Previously, a high-level Iranian delegation led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf visited Qatar to discuss peace negotiation processes with the US. A key agenda was the release of Iran’s frozen assets abroad.
According to Tasnim News Agency, citing sources close to the negotiation team, Iran has submitted a 14-point peace proposal. The main demand is for the US to immediately unfreeze Iran’s overseas assets, valued at US$24 billion (equivalent to approximately Rp427.2 billion). Under the proposed scheme, half of the assets would be released in the first phase, with the remainder following in subsequent stages.
The Iranian delegation was led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Central Bank Governor Abdolnaser Hemmati also in attendance.
