Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia — American intelligence analysts are reportedly conducting an in-depth investigation into Russia’s involvement in a series of Iranian combat drone strikes that struck several secret facilities belonging to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the Gulf region. Washington suspects Moscow provided assistance in the form of precision targeting intelligence data as well as advanced drone navigation technology.

According to a Reuters report on Thursday (23/07/2026), US intelligence officials stated that the level of effectiveness and accuracy of Iran’s drone attacks on the secret CIA sites is a strong indication of third-party technical support.

At least two CIA facilities were reportedly struck in March: the CIA station office within the US Embassy complex in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and a separate facility in eastern Iraq.

“We cannot accept a situation in which a partner state provides sensitive intelligence data to target our operations,” one official confirmed regarding the intelligence investigation.

Several parties suspect that Tehran’s capability and success would not have been possible without Russian assistance. Beyond intelligence support, Washington believes Moscow has helped improve the technology and accuracy of Iran’s drones.

“Russia helped Tehran improve the accuracy of the Shahed-136 by supplying the Kometa-M satellite navigation system, which is far more precise and difficult to reach with jamming signals,” another intelligence source said regarding Moscow’s technology integration into Iranian drones.

According to an internal memo from a Western intelligence agency, the attack on the US Embassy in Riyadh involved a pair of Iranian-made Shahed drones modified with advanced Russian technology. The first drone reportedly breached the outer wall of the Embassy building, followed by a second drone that entered through the gap created by the explosion and detonated inside the CIA station office area.

Russia’s involvement is strongly suspected to include the integration of the Kometa-M satellite navigation module into Iranian unmanned aircraft. This assistance has proven to enhance the Shahed drones’ ability to manoeuvre towards and destroy secret US locations that are otherwise tightly guarded and hidden from the public.

Suspicions of targeting data support from Moscow grew stronger after the recent Iranian ballistic missile attack on a US air base military barracks in Jordan over the weekend, which killed two American soldiers.

Analysts believe the widening technical cooperation demonstrates Moscow’s readiness to go further in disrupting Washington’s military and intelligence operations in the Middle East.

“They share an interest in trying to reduce or eliminate US influence altogether in the region they have designated as their sphere of influence,” said former CIA Station Chief Daniel Hoffman.
