Iran Says Trump's Commitment to Ceasefire is 'Paper Thin'

The Chairman of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Ebrahim Azizi, stated that US President Donald Trump has once again demonstrated a lack of commitment to the principles of negotiation and ceasefire.

“The United States has attacked Iran again in the midst of ongoing negotiations. The US President has once again shown that he is not committed to the principles of negotiation or ceasefire,” Azizi wrote via his X account on Saturday (27/6).

“This reckless violation of the ceasefire will, as usual, ultimately lead to setbacks and regret on their part. Blaming each other is no longer effective,” he added.

Azizi made these statements after the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced via X that its forces had launched attacks against Iranian missile and drone storage facilities, as well as coastal radar, on 26 June.

According to CENTCOM, the attack was a response to an alleged attack on a commercial vessel passing through the Strait of Hormuz the previous day. Trump also claimed via the Truth Social platform that Iran had launched four one-way attack drones towards ships traversing the Strait of Hormuz, accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire between the two nations.

These developments occur while Iran and the US are negotiating to finalise a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding a ceasefire to end the US-Israel war against Iran, which began in late February.

The negotiations also aim to reach an agreement concerning Iran’s nuclear programme and the lifting of sanctions against the country.

The MoU came into effect on 18 June after being electronically signed by Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. The document provides a 60-day window for both nations to negotiate a final agreement regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and the removal of US sanctions.
