Iran Says Shipping in Strait of Hormuz Still Requires Coordination with Tehran

Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iran has stated that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz still requires coordination with Tehran, despite an agreement reached with the United States to end the conflict that began in late February 2026. Iranian state television reported on Thursday (18 June) that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) continues to enforce coordination requirements with its navy for vessels wishing to transit the strategic waterway. On Wednesday (17 June), Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at ending the conflict between Tehran and Washington that started at the end of February. The document stipulates that commercial shipping will resume shortly. However, full restoration of maritime traffic will take place within 30 days, provided that technical and military obstacles are overcome and Iran completes mine-clearing operations. Tehran will also consult with other nations bordering the Persian Gulf. As part of the agreement, the United States will lift the naval blockade imposed on Iranian ports. The blockade, enforced by US forces on 13 April, had virtually halted commercial shipping through the critical waterway.
