Iran Says Repeated US Sanctions Have Failed

Iran believes the repeated sanctions policy imposed by the United States will not achieve Washington’s desired objectives. Tehran says the policy has failed and instead further demonstrates US pressure on Iranian society.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei made the statement on Monday (24/8) during a weekly press conference, as reported by the semi-official Iranian news agency Tasnim.

“Washington’s persistence in a failed method produces nothing but proof of America’s animosity towards the Iranian people, because they know full well that the direct consequence of these sanctions falls on ordinary citizens,” Baqaei told reporters, as cited by Anadolu on Monday (24/8).

According to Baqaei, the imposition of sanctions and acts of intimidation against other countries to restrict trade relations contradict the principles of free trade and respect for national sovereignty.

“This illegal practice is a warning to the international community, because America’s excessive actions and violations of the law in international relations have even sparked protests from its close allies,” he said.

Baqaei assessed that Washington should re-evaluate the policy because the continued imposition of sanctions does not resolve the issues between the two countries.

In the same press conference, Baqaei also responded to reports about the possibility of Iran joining the Mecca Pact. He said Iran has so far not received an official invitation to become part of the pact. However, according to Baqaei, there have been discussions about regional security with the countries involved.

Baqaei said Iran has not been asked to join but that proposals have been put forward for talks with these countries about regional security. The Mecca Pact was signed in early August by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan. The agreement aims to strengthen security cooperation and collective defence while enhancing regional stability.

Meanwhile, the security situation in the Middle East has grown increasingly tense since the United States and Israel launched a joint attack on Iran in late February. Tehran retaliated by launching attacks against several countries in the region where US military assets are located.
