Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has received a ‘new proposal’ from the United States (US). Iran is reviewing the proposal. “In recent days, with the presence of the Pakistani army commander in Tehran as an intermediary and mediator in the negotiations, a new proposal has been submitted by the United States, which is currently being reviewed by the Islamic Republic of Iran and has not yet been responded to,” the Supreme National Security Council stated in a statement broadcast by state media, as reported by AFP on Saturday (18/4/2026). The Iranian negotiation delegation “will not make any compromises, retreats, or concessions whatsoever, and will defend the interests of the Iranian nation with all its might”. Pakistan is the main mediator between the US and Iran, which are at odds. Pakistan also hosted the initial rounds of negotiations between the two major powers. The disclosure of the new proposal comes hours after Iran announced it would reinstate the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This is in response to the ongoing US blockade of Iranian ports. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that “Iran is determined to enforce supervision and control over traffic through the Strait of Hormuz until the war ends definitively”, emphasising that the US blockade would hinder even “conditional and limited reopening”. The council said that the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz would involve Tehran issuing transit certificates to ships, “as well as requiring payment of fees related to services for security, safety, and environmental protection”.
