Iran Retaliates for Ali Larijani's Death, Missile Attack Kills Two in Israel
Iran’s missile attack killed two people near Israel’s commercial centre in Tel Aviv. Israel’s national railway company suspended operations due to shrapnel damage at a station in the city.
According to AFP on Wednesday 18 March 2026, authorities reported that falling ammunition struck several locations across central Israel in an overnight attack that triggered air raid sirens throughout the region, following a day of heavy Israeli bombardment in Iran and Lebanon.
The latest deaths bring the total death toll from missile strikes in Israel since the outbreak of Middle East conflict late last month to fourteen people.
AFP footage from Ramat Gan, a city outside Tel Aviv, showed police officers, rescue personnel, and military personnel on streets filled with debris. Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency medical service said two people were found dead at the scene.
“We saw smoke billowing from a building with severe damage and broken glass,” said a statement from medical personnel.
In Bnei Brak, another city in the Tel Aviv area, a man sustained minor injuries from shrapnel, according to the medical service. Images shared by Magen David Adom showed damage at several locations, including burning vehicles, destroyed vehicles, and debris.
Israeli police said their bomb disposal experts “were operating at several impact sites involving ammunition debris in the Tel Aviv district”.
The national railway company said in a statement posted online that shrapnel caused damage to platforms at Tel Aviv’s main station, announcing that trains “were temporarily halted nationwide”. It said no casualties were reported.
The military shared footage of the Home Front Command team at a railway station, showing broken glass on platforms and some window damage to trains.
In a separate statement, the Home Front Command said their search and rescue teams “were operating at several locations across central Israel where impact reports had been received”.
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps stated in a statement that it had launched missiles at central Israel “in retaliation for the blood of martyr Dr. Ali Larijani and his followers”. Ali Larijani was a top security official in the country.
Israel stated on Tuesday 17 March that it had killed Larijani, Iran’s security chief, and Tehran has since confirmed his death.
