Iran Reaps Windfall as Europe Prepares to Ease Sanctions Following Peace Deal
Iran stands to gain significant economic benefits following a peace agreement with the United States. Several major European nations have stated they are prepared to ease or even lift sanctions against Tehran if the country fulfils its commitments regarding its nuclear programme.
In a joint statement on Sunday, Britain, France, Germany, and Italy expressed support for the deal reached by the US and Iran to end a conflict that has lasted for months. The four countries also opened the path for the normalisation of economic relations with Iran.
‘Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. We are ready to work with the US, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) towards this goal,’ read the joint statement by the leaders of the four European nations.
Furthermore, the countries known as the E4 affirmed their readiness to lift sanctions that have burdened Iran’s economy. However, this step will be carried out gradually and will depend on Tehran’s implementation of its nuclear commitments.
‘We are ready to lift related sanctions in response to clear and verifiable steps by Iran regarding its nuclear programme,’ the statement continued.
The European stance emerged after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington and Tehran had reached an agreement to end the war. The deal is scheduled to be formally signed in Switzerland on Friday.
If sanctions are lifted, Iran could potentially gain broader access to the international financial system, increase energy exports, and attract back foreign investment that has been hampered for years by Western restrictions.
For global markets, this development also has the potential to ease geopolitical tensions in the Middle East that have triggered spikes in energy prices and disrupted international trade flows.
Nevertheless, the European countries stressed that the lifting of sanctions will not be automatic. They demand concrete and verifiable steps from Iran to ensure the country’s nuclear programme remains peaceful and does not lead to the development of nuclear weapons.
