Iran Ready to Honour Commitments with US, Provided Washington Does the Same

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated his country will honour the commitments of an agreement if the United States does the same. However, he warned that Tehran would respond firmly to any threats. The statement was made by Pezeshkian via a post on platform X on Monday local time. “Mutual understanding is a two-way street. If the American side adheres to the agreement, we will also fulfil our commitments,” Pezeshkian said. Without naming names specifically, he also made a jibe apparently aimed at the White House. “Our approach to unreasonable grievances and baseless threats depends on rationality and human dignity in decision-making, as well as firm and unwavering defence when it comes to action,” Pezeshkian added. Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed there is no scheduled negotiation meeting with the US at any level in the coming days. Tehran is currently focused on implementing the memorandum of understanding (MoU), rather than moving towards final treaty talks. Under the MoU, negotiations for a final treaty can only begin if initial points, including matters of oil sales (Clause 10) and the release of frozen assets (Clause 11), have commenced. Regarding the assets, a delegation of Iranian experts is scheduled to fly to Doha, Qatar, at the end of this week to follow up on the process. President Pezeshkian previously announced that part of Iran’s frozen funds in Qatar would soon be returned to Tehran. “Based on the plan that has been made, US$6 million out of a total of US$12 billion of Iran’s resources in Qatar will be returned to the country, and the necessary follow-up is also underway for the return of the remainder of these resources,” Pezeshkian said during a meeting with senior clerics in Qom. However, the US side stated that no Iranian assets have been released to date. Washington stressed that the process of releasing the humanitarian funds would be strictly monitored. “Iran’s released assets will be used to purchase American agricultural products to feed the Iranian people. Any release of funds for humanitarian purchases will be linked to Iran’s performance and implementation of the MOU,” a US official said in a statement on Monday.
