REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Iran plans to enforce special shipping traffic rules in the Strait of Hormuz. This was stated by Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani to RIA Novosti on Wednesday (15/4/2026). “The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic asset of our country. Like any asset used as a bargaining tool in relations with other countries, special rules need to be established,” Mohajerani said. She emphasised that Iran will use all necessary means to ensure its national interests regarding sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz are respected. On 11 April, Iran and the United States began negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, after US President Donald Trump announced a two-week ceasefire agreement. The following day, US Vice President JD Vance stated that both sides failed to reach an agreement and the US delegation returned without results. On the same day, Trump also announced that the US would begin imposing a blockade on all ships attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz. He also ordered the US Navy to track and intercept ships that pay fees to Iran for passage through the shipping lane.
