Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian praised Spain’s decision to refrain from assisting the United States in its war against Iran, describing Madrid’s stance as responsible amid mounting tensions in the Middle East. “The responsible conduct of Spain in opposing human rights violations and the outright military aggression by the Zionist coalition and the United States against various countries, including Iran, shows that ethics and conscience are still alive in the West,” Pezeshkian said. “I commend Spanish officials for their position,” he added.

Earlier, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that his country would not help the United States or Israel in its confrontation with Iran. He said Madrid’s position could be summed up in a few words: “no war,” in a video posted on X.

The U.S. government was reported to have asked several European countries, including Spain, to permit the use of their military bases in operations against Iran. Madrid refused the request.

U.S. President Donald Trump subsequently criticized that decision and threatened to cut trade with Spain, saying, “We will halt all trade with Spain. We do not want to have anything to do with Spain.”

Tensions in the Middle East intensified after the United States and Israel launched a major strike against Iran on February 28. On the same day, Iran carried out retaliatory strikes. Since then, both sides have continued exchanging attacks resulting in casualties in various regions.
