Iran pledges special treatment for Russian and Chinese ships in Strait of Hormuz
TEHERAN – Iran has stated that Russia and China will receive special treatment when their ships pass through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic shipping route that is one of the world’s key energy trade arteries.
Chairman of Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Ebrahim Azizi said the two countries have been strategic partners of Tehran and have consistently supported Iran in difficult situations.
“Strategic nations such as China and Russia will continue to enjoy special treatment and favourable conditions regarding the Strait of Hormuz,” Azizi said on Saturday.
He added that the close relationship between Iran and Russia and China forms the basis for the special facilities. The policy will apply to both commercial and tanker vessels from the two countries.
Azizi noted that Moscow and Beijing have demonstrated commitment to cooperate with Tehran across various fields and have remained on Iran’s side during pressured times.
In addition to affirming special treatment for Russia and China, Azizi stressed that Iran has full authority to determine policies regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Strait of Hormuz holds specific geopolitical significance for us,” he said.
He added that the area forms part of Iran’s sovereign territory, including its territorial waters. Therefore, Tehran has the right to take any necessary steps regarding the management and regulation of the Strait of Hormuz.
“The area is part of our territorial waters and geographical area. Therefore, Iran has the right to make any decisions it deems necessary regarding the Strait of Hormuz, and no one should question this right,” Azizi said.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important shipping routes as it serves as the primary gateway for oil and gas exports from the Gulf region. Developments concerning the route often attract attention from energy markets and the international community.
