Iran plans new mechanism for transit fees through the Strait of Hormuz

Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iran has devised a mechanism to regulate maritime traffic through designated routes in the Strait of Hormuz and will impose fees for “special services” provided within the system, a senior MP said on Saturday.

“In this process, only commercial vessels and parties cooperating with Iran will benefit from it,” Ebrahim Azizi, chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, wrote on the social media platform X.

While stating that Tehran would soon announce the plan, Azizi added: “This route will remain closed to operators from what is called ‘Project Freedom’.”

The United States and Israel launched attacks against Iran on February 28, which triggered retaliatory actions by Tehran against Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf region, accompanied by a closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through mediation by Pakistan, but negotiations in Islamabad failed to produce a permanent agreement. Since April 13, the US has imposed a naval blockade targeting Iranian maritime traffic in the strait.

US President Donald Trump also announced “Project Freedom” in early May, promising to escort ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The pledge was made by Trump, even though Iran asserted that any passage through the strategic waterway requires prior approval from Tehran. However, Trump later announced a suspension of the initiative.
