REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, ISTANBUL - Iranian state news agency Tasnim reported on Sunday (24 May 2026) that a potential peace agreement between Iran and the United States would encompass ending hostilities across all fronts. In addition to halting Israeli attacks in Lebanon, the US is reportedly committed to lifting oil sanctions on Iran during negotiations.

Should the deal be reached, the Strait of Hormuz would not fully revert to its pre-war status. However, the number of vessels permitted to transit the strategic waterway would be restored to pre-war levels within 30 days, according to Tasnim.

Iran emphasised its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz through various measures, details of which will be announced later. Meanwhile, Iran insists on the release of at least some of its frozen assets, and the potential agreement would include a 60-day window for negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear programme.

Tehran also called for the lifting of US blockades on Iranian ports, stating that no changes to Strait of Hormuz regulations would occur if the blockade remains in place. Any modifications to navigation and transit through the strait would depend on the implementation of other US commitments in the memorandum of understanding, the report stated.

US President Donald Trump said on Saturday (23 May 2026) that the agreement with Iran to end the war had been ‘mostly negotiated’ and was awaiting finalisation.

The breakthrough came after Pakistani Army Chief Asim Munir’s visit to Tehran, his second in recent weeks. The US-Iran ceasefire, which began on 28 February, was first mediated by Pakistan on 8 April.
