Iran Opens New Negotiations to End War with US; This is What Causes the Impasse
Lebanon welcomes the agreement with Israel to extend the ceasefire for another 45 days after the deadline expired on Sunday (17/05/2026). This follows talks in the United States, even as Israeli forces continue to launch attacks on towns and villages in southern Lebanon.
At least 12 people were killed on Friday, including three paramedics, according to Lebanese authorities.
Quoting Aljazeera, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said during a BRICS meeting that Tehran had received communication from US President Donald Trump’s administration indicating openness to new negotiations aimed at ending the war.
However, Araghchi said an “impasse” remains regarding the issue of Iran’s enriched nuclear material.
Trump also suggested that he may be willing to accept a deferral of Iran’s civilian nuclear program for two decades, provided Tehran demonstrates what he described as genuine commitment to a broader agreement.
