The United States and Iran have begun a third round of indirect talks in Geneva, against the backdrop of President Donald Trump’s threats to launch an attack if a nuclear deal is not reached. Several analysts believe that the chances of reaching a compromise are still uncertain, especially regarding the demand for a complete halt to uranium enrichment.

Ahead of the talks, CNN’s political and national security analyst, David Sanger, assessed that the prospects for reaching an agreement remain uncertain. He warned that tensions between the two countries could continue to escalate if the outcome of the negotiations is unsatisfactory.

“The first question is, even if they reach an agreement on the nuclear issue, which seems somewhat doubtful, will that be enough to prevent military action?” Sanger said to Elex Michaelson of CNN.

Sanger explained that in his State of the Union address, Trump highlighted four main issues related to Iran, namely the nuclear program, the missile program, the handling of protesters in recent anti-government demonstrations, and Tehran’s support for regional militant groups such as Hezbollah and Hamas.

“But it is the nuclear issue that the president keeps repeating,” Sanger said. He also outlined the impasse that has emerged on the issue of uranium enrichment.

According to him, there is a fundamental difference between Washington’s demands and Tehran’s position.

“Is there room between the US demand for no uranium enrichment at all versus Iran’s argument that while they are willing to suspend some of it temporarily, they will not relinquish their right to enrich under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty?” Sanger said.

This difference in attitude is seen as the main challenge in achieving a diplomatic breakthrough that can ease tensions between the two countries. (I-2)
