Iran May Consider Islamabad MoU Void if US Continues to Breach Terms, Says Envoy

Repeated violations by the United States of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Iran could prompt Tehran to consider the agreement void, said Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, on Friday. “Iran remains committed to faithfully implementing the MoU, provided the US also remains faithful and fully complies with its own obligations. However, if the US continues to violate its obligations under the MoU, Iran will no longer be bound to fulfil its own obligations under the agreement,” Iravani told reporters after a UN Security Council meeting on Iran. The Iranian diplomat highlighted the resumption of hostilities by the US, assessing it as a major violation of the UN Charter and the first paragraph of the Islamabad MoU, in which the US committed to ceasing hostilities with Iran and refraining from the use of force. “The US bears full international responsibility for all legal and political consequences arising from its unlawful actions,” Iravani stressed. On 18 June, the US and Iran remotely signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the armed conflict that began on 28 February. However, on Wednesday and Thursday, the US attacked Iran, with CENTCOM claiming the action was in response to Iranian restrictions on traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian forces reportedly launched retaliatory strikes targeting US military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. Iran also accused Washington of violating the memorandum of understanding on the cessation of hostilities. Earlier on Friday, Axios reported that a new round of talks between the United States and Iran is expected to take place the following week, likely in Switzerland. US President Donald Trump also stated that both sides had agreed to continue the negotiation process, allegedly at Tehran’s request, but declared that the ceasefire had ended.
