Iran Keeps Door Open for Peace, Pezeshkian Awaits US Commitment

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Tehran is ready to provide an equivalent response if the United States (US) resumes its commitments as agreed upon in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Pezeshkian made the statement during his speech at the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Tuesday (1/9). “I clearly state that if the United States returns to fulfilling its commitments based on that memorandum of understanding, the Islamic Republic of Iran will immediately provide the same response,” he said, as reported by Anadolu.

Pezeshkian accused Washington of failing to implement the established agreement. According to him, the United States ceased its compliance with the deal less than two weeks after the memorandum of understanding was signed.

He noted that Iran subsequently provided a response deemed proportionate to the actions taken by the United States. According to Pezeshkian, the agreement between Iran and the US was reached after both nations endured approximately 40 days of armed conflict. The process was then followed by nearly three months of negotiations conducted through the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar.

Pezeshkian’s statement indicates that Tehran still maintains an opening for diplomatic channels, provided that the United States first reinstates its commitments as stipulated in the memorandum of understanding.
