A new catastrophe has struck Iran following its peace deal with the United States, as the country faces a massive cyberattack that has paralysed services at major banks. Iran’s banking technology provider said on Tuesday (23/6) local time that the cyberattack had disrupted card-based banking services at Bank Melli, Bank Saderat, and Bank Tejarat. This prompted the temporary suspension of all card-related operations at the three banks to prevent further unauthorised access, Informatics Services Corporation told state television. Cybersecurity teams are reportedly working to restore operations. The company’s head of public relations said ATM services, point-of-sale terminals, and mobile banking applications connected to the card system were affected by the attack. Similar disruptions were also reported on 14 June 2026, affecting the three banks as well as the Export Development Bank of Iran. The previous disruption occurred when a cyberattack targeted Iran’s communication systems, according to the country’s Banking Coordination Council. Iranian state media quoted the central bank as saying on Tuesday (23/6) that the latest problem should be resolved by Wednesday morning and all services would return to normal. Officials said the previous incident, which took several days to resolve according to Iranian media, did not compromise customer data. Iran has not named who they suspect of carrying out the cyberattack. Previously, authorities have blamed hostile foreign actors such as Israel for similar incidents. Israel has not commented on the accusations.
