Tehran has no intention of relinquishing the rights guaranteed by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), stated Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghaei on Monday, in response to statements from the United States regarding Iran’s uranium enrichment. Last week, US President Donald Trump stated that he would be satisfied if Iran suspended uranium enrichment for 20 years, but noted that Washington would require tangible guarantees that Tehran would comply with such an agreement. “At this time, we are focused on ending the war. Regarding the nuclear issue, we have emphasised that we do not intend to relinquish our rights under the NPT,” Baghaei told reporters. “We have not yet discussed the details of the nuclear issue, and at this stage, all our attention will be focused on efforts to end the war,” he added. One of the pillars of the treaty includes the right of every nation to use, develop, and research nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, such as nuclear power plants.
