Iran: Final agreement hinges on US stance

Iran on Friday stated that a final agreement with the United States depends on Washington halting excessive demands and abandoning contradictory positions, according to a Foreign Ministry statement citing Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

‘Explaining the situation around the Pakistan-mediated diplomatic process, Araghchi emphasised that the final agreement depends on the US ending excessive demands and leaving contradictory positions,’ the ministry statement said.

The statement was issued after Araghchi’s phone call with Oman’s Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi.

Previously, US President Donald Trump said key issues regarding Iran’s nuclear programme and reopening the Strait of Hormuz remain unresolved.

However, Trump stated that Washington and Tehran had reached agreements on other less significant issues.

On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties.

Washington and Tehran then announced a two-week ceasefire on 7 April.

Further negotiations in Islamabad ended without clear results, while the United States imposed a blockade on Iranian ports.

Trump then extended the cessation of hostilities to allow Iran time to prepare a peace proposal.

However, the blockade on Iran remains in place.
