Iran Executes Man Convicted of Supporting Israel and the US

Iran’s judicial authority has announced the execution of a man named Shahram Sadeghi, who was found guilty of ramming several police officers with his car during anti-government protests in January 2026. He was sentenced to death for supporting Zionists and the United States.

“Shahram Sadeghi, who was sentenced to death for carrying out operational acts in support of the Zionist regime and the United States, was executed this morning,” said a statement on the Iranian judiciary’s website, Mizan Online, as reported by AFP on Sunday (16/8/2026).

The website said the man struck several police officers with his car on 8 January in Karaj, west of Tehran. The incident left seven officers injured.

The protest movement, initially triggered by the high cost of living in late December 2025, quickly developed into large-scale anti-government demonstrations across Iran. The unrest peaked on 8 and 9 January.

Iranian authorities reported more than 3,000 deaths and linked the violence to ‘terrorist acts’ masterminded by the United States and Israel. Meanwhile, human rights groups based outside Iran said security forces opened fire on protesters.

The number of executions in Iran has risen since the start of the war in the Middle East, which broke out on 28 February following US-Israeli strikes against Iran. Most of those executions have been linked to the protest movement.
