Iran has denied a statement by US President Donald Trump claiming that Tehran had requested a ceasefire. Iran asserts that Trump’s statement is baseless.

According to AFP news agency on Wednesday (1 April 2026), this was conveyed by Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. Esmaeil’s statement was reported by state television, quoting the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

“Trump’s statement about Iran’s request for a ceasefire is wrong and baseless,” said Esmaeil Baqaei.

Trump had previously claimed that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had requested a ceasefire from the US. However, Trump said the US would only consider this if the Strait of Hormuz was free from ship traffic.

Trump conveyed this via his Truth Social platform. Trump’s claim stated that Masoud had just requested a ceasefire.

“The President of Iran has just requested a ceasefire from the United States!” Trump wrote.

Trump claimed he would consider it. Provided, he said, that the Strait of Hormuz was open and free again.

“We will consider it when the Strait of Hormuz is open, free, and clear. Until then, we will bomb Iran until it is destroyed or, as they say, back to the Stone Age!!!” Trump wrote.

Regional escalation continues since Israel and the US launched attacks against Iran on 28 February, killing more than 1,340 people to date, including the Supreme Leader at the time, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting US military assets, causing casualties and damage to infrastructure as well as disrupting global markets and aviation.
