Iran has strongly denied accusations made by US President Donald Trump, who claimed that Tehran is developing missiles capable of reaching the United States and is pursuing nuclear weapons.

Amid ongoing negotiations, both countries have exchanged strong statements regarding Iran’s nuclear program and defense systems.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baqaei, rejected the accusations without directly naming Trump. He described the statements as baseless and propaganda.

“Whatever they accuse Iran of regarding its nuclear program, its ballistic missiles, and the number of casualties during the January unrest, is merely a repetition of big lies,” Baqaei said, as quoted by AFP, Thursday (February 26).

The statement came after Trump accused Iran of having malicious nuclear ambitions and developing dangerous weapons systems.

“Iran has developed missiles that can threaten Europe and our bases abroad,” Trump said.

“They are working on building missiles that will soon reach the United States,” he added.

Trump also accused Tehran of trying to revive its nuclear program from scratch. “They are now pursuing their evil nuclear ambitions,” the US president said.

Trump’s statements came amid ongoing nuclear negotiations between Washington and Tehran, which have gone through several rounds of talks.

In the context of these negotiations, Trump has repeatedly threatened to launch a military strike if Iran fails to reach an agreement.

The US president has demanded that Iran halt its nuclear enrichment to zero and strictly limit its missile production.

On the other hand, Iran has stated that missiles are part of its national defense system. Tehran has also reiterated that its nuclear program is developed solely for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the Iranian government has expressed its willingness to continue to be under the supervision of the international atomic agency to prove that its nuclear activities are not directed towards military purposes. (H-4)
