Iran demands US release merchant vessel Touska and its crew

Tehran (ANTARA) - Iran has demanded the immediate release of the crew of the merchant vessel Touska, which was seized by the United States in the Gulf of Oman, including the families of the crew on board the vessel, according to Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

On Sunday (19/4), the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that it had seized the Iranian-flagged vessel, which was said to be attempting to breach the US blockade in the Gulf of Oman.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, while warning of the serious consequences of the illegal and criminal actions of the United States, emphasises the need for the immediate release of the Iranian vessel, its crew, and their families,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in its statement.

Iran also strongly condemned the seizure and described the US action as maritime piracy as well as a violation of the UN Charter, principles of international law, and the ceasefire, the ministry stated.

At the end of February, the United States and Israel launched attacks on targets in Iran, including in the capital Tehran, causing damage and killing civilians.

Then, on 7 April, the US and Iran announced a two-week ceasefire, followed by negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan, on 11 April, which ended without results.

The US then blockaded Iranian ports, and mediators are now attempting to arrange the next round of talks.
