The Iranian government has officially demanded that the UN Security Council take action following a United States military attack on Larak Island in the Persian Gulf. Iran has described the strike as an overt act of aggression, a war crime, and a direct assault on the nation’s sovereignty.

In a letter dated 31 August 2026, addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the UN Security Council, Gholamhossein Darzi, Iran’s Ambassador and Chargé d’Affaires to the UN, stated that US forces attacked the Iranian island on Sunday night, 30 August.

According to the Iranian media outlet Press TV, Darzi wrote that the attack resulted in fatalities and injuries to Iranian defenders and civilians, as well as damage to both public and private property.

Tehran characterised the attack as a clear violation of Iran’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a flagrant breach of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.
