REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TEHERAN – Iran is considering the possibility of a British military base becoming a legitimate target for Tehran after it was used by US bomber aircraft in attacks on the Middle Eastern country. This was stated by Iran’s Ambassador to London, Seyed Ali Mousavi. “This is a very important issue that we are considering. It is a very important matter for our self-defence,” Mousavi told The Times newspaper on Tuesday (31/3/2026). The ambassador welcomed the “initial stance” of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer not to join in the “criminal actions of America and the Israeli regime.” London’s authorisation for US bomber aircraft to take off from RAF Fairford airbase could change the situation, he said. “Our military section will decide appropriately. It depends on your activities. It depends on the British decision regarding this matter. Every option must be considered. We are very careful and thorough in defending ourselves,” Mousavi added. Fairford is the only base in Europe for US strategic bombers, which have previously been launched from there to attack Iraq and Yugoslavia. Currently, airstrikes from that base are targeting Iran. Iran has attacked Israeli territory and US military targets in the Middle East in retaliation for joint military operations launched by the US and Israel on 28 February. The first day of those military actions witnessed the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, while a girls’ school in southern Iran was also bombed. Iran estimates the death toll at more than 1,300 people.
