Iran Conflict Unending: US Deploys Third Aircraft Carrier to Middle East
The Pentagon, or the United States Department of Defense, is preparing to deploy a third US aircraft carrier, along with its strike group and additional ships from the Marine Corps, to the Middle East region.
This deployment will add approximately 9,000 to 10,000 US military personnel to the region. The report regarding the deployment of the US aircraft carrier, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Friday (2/10/2026), was conveyed by the prominent US media outlet, Wall Street Journal (WSJ), in a recent report citing US officials on Thursday (1/10) local time.
According to the WSJ, the deployment is being carried out while US President Donald Trump is considering a return to attacking Iran following the mid-term elections in early November. The additional ships, fighter jets, and US Marine and Navy personnel are expected to arrive in the Middle East by the end of November.
The USS Theodore Roosevelt, the third US aircraft carrier to be deployed to the Middle East, departed from San Diego on Sunday (27/9) local time for the scheduled deployment. The USS Makin Island Amphibious Task Force, carrying Marine personnel from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, departed on Monday (29/9) local time.
Currently, two US aircraft carriers, the USS George HW Bush and the USS George Washington, are already present in the Middle East. If the USS George Washington remains in the region when the USS Theodore Roosevelt arrives, the US will have three aircraft carriers in the Middle East simultaneously for the first time since April—the period before a fragile US-Iran ceasefire ended the fighting on 28 February.
These additional forces will join more than 50,000 US military personnel already stationed in the region. However, there is a possibility that the USS George Washington will return to its home base in Japan, leaving two US aircraft carriers in the area.
The deployment of the aircraft carrier and its troops follows Trump’s rejection of Iran’s latest proposal regarding a ceasefire and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz within seven days. The latest negotiation efforts, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, also reached a deadlock.
In an interview with TIME magazine on Thursday (1/10), Trump stated that he could launch attacks against Iran again after the mid-term elections take place, if no agreement is reached.
