Iran has finally confirmed that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in a combined air strike by the United States and Israel. Khamenei was reportedly attacked whilst at his office.

“The Supreme Leader of Iran has achieved martyrdom,” according to a report by state broadcaster IRIB, as reported by CNN International via detikNews on Sunday, 1 March 2026.

According to Al Jazeera, the news agencies Tasnim and Fars have also confirmed the death of Ali Khamenei due to attacks by Israel and the US in Iran.

Iran’s state news agencies IRNA and Fars reported that when the strike occurred on Saturday, 28 February in the early morning local time, Khamenei was in his office. He was said to be “carrying out the duties assigned to him”.

However, no further detailed reports regarding his assassination have been announced. The Iranian government is reported to have declared a 40-day period of mourning.

The death of Ayatollah Khamenei had previously been announced by US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“Khamenei, one of the most evil people in history, is dead,” Trump said on his Truth Social media network, according to AFP.

“This morning, in a devastating surprise attack, the residence complex of dictator Ali Khamenei was destroyed in the heart of Tehran,” Netanyahu stated in a television broadcast, according to AFP.
