Iran condemns US use of Strait of Hormuz issue as pretext for attacks

Moscow (ANTARA) - Iran has condemned the United States for using the issue of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz as a pretext to justify military action and pressure against Tehran, according to a report by Press TV on Saturday. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs asserted that Tehran will utilise all necessary means to protect its rights, interests, and national security.

This statement follows a report by CBS News suggesting that the United States and Israel are preparing large-scale attacks against Iranian energy infrastructure, which could be launched as early as this weekend. Despite the escalating tensions with Washington, Iran reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining good relations with neighbouring Middle Eastern nations.

On 18 June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the conflict that had erupted on 28 February. However, since 8 July, United States forces have launched several waves of attacks against Iran. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that these operations were a response to Iranian actions against merchant vessels traversing the Strait of Hormuz. Iran subsequently retaliated by launching attacks against United States military bases in the Middle East. United States President Donald Trump subsequently declared that the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran is no longer in effect.
